William Kamkwamba

William had always wanted to be an engineer. He grew up in a village in Malawi (Africa).Their last maize harvest had been poor and William didn't know if his family would make it through December to March; when the first young maize harvest would be. Him and his family, also many others in the village only had one meal a day! There was famine all across Malawi at that time.

William knew that to be a successful engineer he would have to have good grades; especially in science. His grades were poor due to not being able to study at night and having to wake up early to work in the fields before school. William his parents and his six sisters weren't able to study at night because  they had no electricity.

William and his sisters had to stop going to school because their family couldn't afford it. So William spent most of his time at the village library looking at science books. One day he picked up a book called 'using energy' with a picture a of a wind turbine on the front. He started building a mini windmill in his bedroom out of scraps from the scrap heap. after finding out that a mini wind turbine can power a radio he started building one of a larger scale to power electricity for his entire house.

People would queues outside his house to get there phones charged. Now having electricity  William and his sisters could study into the night. Williams family maniged to survive the famine despite many many people didn't.

In case you were wondering how this ties into climate change. Due to climate change the December rains were late which caused flooding and then drought after that which turned into famine.
